How To: Sync Taskpaper and iPhone Notes over wifi (Formatted version)

IMPORTANT!: These instructions are for the version which formats the iPhone notes (Headings underlined, projects in blocks for clarity, @done tasks line-through, tags in blue, notes in grey). For the plain version, please visit these instructions.

- a Hacked iPhone or hacked iPod Touch with Notes installed
- Installer.app installed on the hacked iPhone
- Mac OS X 10.5+
- Python 2.5+

I love Taskpaper, and I love the iPhone Notes app (yeh weirdo, I know!) and together they make for an excellent and simple GTD solution. This tutorial will guide you through the processes needed to set up semi-automatic syncing bewteen the two - at the end of it you will have two applications (synctoiphone and syncfromiphone) which you can put in your dock, on the desktop, run from quicksilver or launchbar, whatever suits your needs most.

This works out of the box so to speak on Leopard, Tiger users may need to install a newer version of python - see footnote [1]. Usual disclaimers, you do this at your own risk etc as you will be directly writing to your iphone notes databse. It is prudent to make a backup copy should things go wrong.

Apple Store Glasgow

Went to the grand opening of the new Apple Store in Glasgow today, Scotland’s first. Wasn’t disappointed, managed to swag a free T-Shirt, but honestly was expecting a few more to be queuing than actually were - I got there about an hour before opening and was 210th in line, by 9.00 probably about 400-500 in total.

Interior of the store is very well done, a mixture of gorgeous Apple design and original stone wall features. Picked up a copy of iLife ‘08, popped across the road to Starbucks and sat there watching everyone else piling in throughout the morning whilst trying the new software. Noticed that Apple’s free wifi reaches across to Starbucks, hmm one wonders how much Starbucks are going to make out of the pay for tmobile wifi??

Photo from Paul Robertson’s photostream - forgot my camera so just grabbed the first I could find from Flickr.

The BBC - kind of listening

There were many mac/*nix users out there that were a little disapointed to learn that our license fee was being used to build and support a Microsoft only software app for 7 day on demand TV catchup, the BBC iPlayer. Our optimism for a cross-platform system was somewhat bouyed by this bbc article, in which Mr Highfield stated

The BBC’s proposed iPlayer service, offering catch-up TV via the web and cable TV, would be re-engineered to work with Apple Macs.

So, they had listened to the comments, questionairre feedback and the 10 downing Street epetition then? I wonder. Hmm, let me see there is a new article today saying that the BBC Trust has approved the BBC iPlayer. Little mention of mac/*nix in that article though. Lets dig a little deeper into the report. Arh, right then, theres the little gem I was looking for:

seven-day catch-up television over the internet, which relies on digital rights management licensing provided by Microsoft, was required to be made available to users of Apple and Linux operating systems within a reasonable timeframe, which the Trust proposed should be two years

TWO YEARS!?! You have got to be kidding me. This is unacceptable. Full stop. If a suitable DRM system is not in place for a cross-platform system, then the whole iPlayer needs to be delayed until such time as a solution is found. What sort of competetive edge is this going to give Microsoft based systems, if for two years a user sees the iPlayer is only available in Windows??

Boo to the beeb.
